Warm-Weather Getaways for October

By Carrie Dunlea

As the crisp fall air settles over much of the U.S., some of the best travel destinations are still basking in warmth, offering an inviting escape for those looking to prolong the sunny days. While many popular hotspots are overrun with tourists during peak summer months, October provides a perfect opportunity to visit these locations without the hustle and bustle. From scenic desert  landscapes to coastal retreats, these warm-weather destinations offer a blend of relaxation and adventure—without the crowds.

Whether you’re looking to explore historic streets, hike through stunning natural parks, or simply soak up the sun on a quiet beach, these spots are ideal for an off-season getaway.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston embodies southern charm and historical allure, but October is when the weather cools just enough to make exploring comfortable without being too hot or humid. The city’s historic district, with its antebellum mansions and cobblestone streets, feels like a journey back in time. Don’t miss visiting The Battery, a defensive seawall and promenade offering stunning views of the harbor and nearby Fort Sumter.

For a unique experience, take a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride through the city’s streets, where knowledgeable guides share Charleston’s fascinating history. A visit to Boone Hall Plantation provides a glimpse into the region’s agricultural past, complete with moss-draped oak trees and historic grounds.

Another must-see for tea enthusiasts is the Bigelow Tea Plantation on nearby Wadmalaw Island. As the only large-scale tea plantation in North America, it offers a unique experience where visitors can tour the lush tea fields, learn about the tea-making process and enjoy tastings of their signature Charleston Tea. It’s a peaceful escape from the city and a rare opportunity to see how tea is grown and harvested.

If you’re craving beach time, head to Folly Beach for some quiet relaxation by the ocean. In the evening, Charleston’s culinary scene comes alive with fresh seafood, Lowcountry cuisine, and fine dining. October also marks the start of oyster season, so be sure to sample this local delicacy at one of the city’s renowned restaurants.

Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs shines in the fall, offering warm days and cool evenings. Though summer brings intense heat, October is a sweet spot, with temperatures hovering in the mid-80s, making it ideal for outdoor activities. A guided tour of celebrity homes is a fun, nostalgic way to explore the area, offering glimpses of where Hollywood icons like Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe once lived.

For the more adventurous, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a must. This rotating tram car carries visitors from the desert floor to the alpine wilderness of Mount San Jacinto State Park, providing stunning views along the way. Once at the top, the park offers hiking trails that meander through beautiful pine forests and rugged landscapes.

Shoppers will find solace in Palm Springs’ charming downtown, filled with mid-century modern boutiques and art galleries. With its luxurious spas and wellness centers, Palm Springs is also the perfect destination for unwinding in style.

Moab, Utah

Though often thought of as a summer playground for adventure-seekers, Moab becomes much more inviting in October. The scorching heat has subsided, making it the perfect time to explore the red rock canyons and arches that define the area. Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park are world-renowned for their stunning natural rock formations, but in fall, they are far less crowded, offering a more intimate experience.

One of the most magical ways to take in Moab’s rugged beauty is by booking a hot air balloon ride over the red rock canyons and mesas. As you float over the stunning landscape, you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the natural arches, towering rock formations, and vast desert stretching out below—an experience that’s both peaceful and awe-inspiring.

For thrill-seekers, Moab offers an array of activities like mountain biking and off-roading. The Hell’s Revenge 4×4 Trail is a popular choice, with hair-raising climbs over slick rock formations and breathtaking views.

If you’re an avid climber, October is prime season for rock climbing at Indian Creek, located just outside Moab. This world-renowned climbing destination draws climbers from across the globe to tackle its challenging vertical sandstone cracks. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or just want to watch the action, Indian Creek offers a unique and adrenaline-pumping experience.

If you prefer something more laid-back, take a scenic float down the Colorado River, or explore Moab’s quaint downtown, lined with local restaurants, art galleries, and shops selling outdoor gear.

St. Augustine, Florida

As the oldest city in the U.S., St. Augustineis steeped in history and charm, making it a great destination for travelers who want a mix of relaxation and culture. The fall brings mild weather and fewer tourists, making it an ideal time to explore its cobblestone streets and Spanish colonial architecture. Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century stone fortress, offers a fascinating look into the city’s past, complete with cannon demonstrations and guided tours.

October, with its spooky atmosphere, is the perfect time to experience one of St. Augustine’s famous ghost tours. The city’s long history is filled with tales of hauntings and several guided tours delve into the supernatural side of its past. The Ghosts & Gravestones Tour takes visitors on a trolley ride to some of the most haunted spots in the city, including the old St. Augustine Lighthouse and the historic Huguenot Cemetery. For those who want to walk through the eerie streets, the St. Augustine Ghostly Experience offers an intimate look at some of the city’s oldest—and allegedly most haunted—buildings. These tours are a fun way to explore the city by night while hearing tales of spirits and strange occurrences.

For a change of pace during the day, head to St. Augustine Beach, where warm waters and soft sands make for a peaceful beach day. Outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy kayaking or paddle boarding through the salt marshes of Anastasia State Park.

Foodies will love the eclectic mix of restaurants offering fresh seafood, Southern fare, and international cuisine. Don’t miss a visit to St. George Street, a pedestrian-only thoroughfare filled with shops, cafes, and street performers.

San Diego, California

San Diego in October offers perfect weather, fewer crowds and plenty to see and do. The iconic San Diego Zoo is a favorite year-round, but fall brings fewer visitors, allowing you to explore its expansive enclosures and beautiful botanical gardens in peace. History buffs will love Old Town San Diego, where they can immerse themselves in California’s early days through well-preserved buildings, museums, and authentic Mexican restaurants.

San Diego’s beaches are another major draw. La Jolla is famous for its picturesque coves and sea caves, perfect for kayaking, snorkeling, or watching the resident sea lions bask on the rocks. Coronado Island, a short ferry ride from downtown, offers wide sandy beaches and a charming, walkable town. For a perfect end to your day, take a sunset cruise along the coast to enjoy breathtaking ocean views bathed in the glow of golden hour.

For art and culture lovers, Balboa Park is a must-see, offering a mix of museums, gardens, and performing arts venues, all set in stunning Spanish-style architecture. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, San Diego offers it all with fewer tourists in the fall.

October is an ideal time to explore these lesser-known gems, offering warmth, beauty and tranquility without the crowds that come with peak tourist seasons. So, pack your bags and head to these warm-weather getaways for a relaxing retreat this fall!
